In April 2016, Global Art Practice (GAP) was established as an MFA program at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Fine Arts. It conducts joint courses in partnership with Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London; and Les Beaux-Arts de Paris. As the final assignment of their first year, GAP students will give a presentation of their work and discuss their experience in the newly established program.

In the joint course with Central Saint Martins, students traveled between Britain and Japan, and engaged in cross-cultural dialogues and collaborative practices under the theme of “Topography.” Examining cultural commonalities and differences, students conducted research which culminated in new works. The completed pieces were exhibited at Ritsurin Garden in Kagawa Prefecture as part of Setouchi Triennale 2016.

In the joint courses with Les Beaux-Arts de Paris, students participated in various classes, workshops and research sessions under the theme “Invisible.” GAP students spent a month at Château de Chambord located in the Loire Valley between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes, a world heritage site in France. They worked closely with professors and students from Les Beaux-Arts de Paris during their stay, and their pieces are currently on view at the castle through February 19th 2017.

There is no single definition of “an art practice within a global context.” This presentation will be an opportunity for students to share their own interpretations, as they overcome challenges and navigate their way in this new program. The event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.
