Born in 1992 in Vimercate, Italy, Irene traveled around the world from a young age and grew up within different cultures and identities, which translated in a growing interest for art.
She moved to Milan to study Fine Arts at NABA (Nova Accademia di Belle Arti) receiving her Bachelor Degree in 2014. She then worked as a gallery assistant in Milan wishing to better understand the art world, until she decided to pursue her art career to become an artist and enrolled at the University of arts in London, Central Saint Martins, where she is currently studying MA Fine Art.

Artist Statement

My practice focuses on the themes of memory, cultural identity and representation. I employ various media from painting to video and sculpture, utilizing and referencing photography in an attempt to explore ideas of subjectivity, abstraction, projection, home, intimacy, archive, mise en abyne and
trompe l’oeil.
I am drawn to discourses that challenge their importance and logic. For example the process of making, that in many cases is more important than the work itself, becomes invisible, hidden in miniatures or the obsessively thought through process.
I often use as foundation photographs taken by someone else. Issues of ownership and authenticity arise to question the right to work with someone else’s memories and how to legitimately utilize the images that represent them. Furthermore, my images, and the resulting artworks, are often born from a specific geographical context, making me wonder if I am bound to talk about its social and political issues too. However, these images live outside history, in a context severed from conflict, in a dimension of memory. This way I can change the idea of geography from how it is usually conceived, to instead talk about the “geography of memory” as the physical realm where images leave their traces.
