2025 LONDON UNIT PROGRAM This July, seven TUA students (five from GAP, one from IMA, and one from Design) traveled to London to participate in a joint Unit program with the MA Intercultural Practices course at Central Saint Martins, UAL. Over the two-week residential, they explored the city, exchanged insights through workshops and seminars, and visited museums, artist residencies, and public projects together. Every year, an alumnus from GAP or another department at Tokyo University of the Arts participates in The Studio Nextdoor (となりのスタジオ) — a collaborative project between the university, the city, and an art NPO. Working together with artists and students from Sanno Elementary School in Toride, the project aims to nurture each child’s unique sensibility and to encourage flexible thinking and perspective toward future society. This year, Zhang Shengyang (Sam), who graduated from GAP this March, joined the project as a collaborating artist. Under the theme “Growing Chairs”, the children let their imaginations run free to design their own chairs. Using old, unused chairs and eco-friendly materials, they worked together to “grow” these creations within each classroom. An Open Studio will be held at Sanno Elementary School on Saturday, the 12th, where you can see the finished chairs as well as the creative process behind them. *If you would like to visit the Open Studio, please contact the Toride Art Project in advance.
