Colloquium – Tokyo meeting
Takayama Akira: Performance, Social Change and Preparing for the Japanese Future
It is well known that the environmental, social, and political-economic challenges that Japan has been facing for some time are, in fact, global conditions: not only the environmental disasters associated with Fukushima, but the empty houses associated with changing ideas of family and the broader population collapse; immigration politics and post-neoliberal economics; and the effects of increasingly powerful digital infrastructures on everyday life—these are visible everywhere.
This colloquium starts with the work of theater director and artist, Takayama Akira; Takayama’s practices include tour performances, urban projects, fiction-reality crossing educational programs, and media development. Just before the Fukushima disaster, he had already begun creating a series of works on the theme of “evacuation,” such as “Compartment City – Tokyo” and “The Complete Manual of Evacuation,” which take that particular moment as a springboard to think more broadly about the process of leaving a given structure of life (literally and conceptually).
To this we are also adding the question, what does it mean to return? Or, return to what? These are at once historical, social, and cultural questions, and while we are starting in a sense with an artist’s work, we intend to provide careful discussion at each of these levels; Takayama’s performance as social practice offers some possibilities, as starting points for multiple futures. And while the focus is very much on Japan itself, especially insofar as Takayama’s work itself locates Japan within a broader contemporary world of conditions, we will also consider Japan’s place within the world today.
This colloquium is the second of two meetings to bring together scholars from a variety of disciplines, artists and Takayama himself. The first meeting was in New York in November 2024. Presentations will be in English unless otherwise stated.

コロキウム 研究発表会 – 東京ミーティング
高山明：パフォーマンス、社会変革、日本の未来に向けた準備
日本が長らく直面してきた環境的・社会的・政治経済的課題は、実のところ世界的な問題でもあります。福島に関連する環境災害のみならず、家族のあり方の変化や人口減少に伴う空き家の増加、移民政策やポスト新自由主義、そして日常生活に大きな影響を及ぼすデジタル環境の拡大—これらの現状は日本に限らず、世界各地で同時に進行しています。
本コロキウムは、演出家・アーティストとして国際的に活動する高山明の作品を出発点とし、これらの問題を多角的に考察するものです。高山の実践には、都市空間へ介入するツアー・パフォーマンスに加えて、教育事業やメディア開発への展開も含まれています。彼は2011年の福島の災害の前から既に「避難」をテーマとする作品に取り組んでおり、『個室都市東京』（2009）や『完全避難マニュアル 東京版』（2010）といった作品を制作しました。これらの作品では、私たちが前提としている日常の制度からの離脱という行為について、文字通りにも概念的にも、より広い視野で問い直す試みがなされています。
本シンポジウムの中心的な問いは、「日常という制度から避難するとはいかなることか？それは実践としてどのような形を取りうるのか？」というのものです。さらに、「帰還するとは何を意味するのか？避難の先にある『帰る場所』とは何か？」といった問いもあわせて考えていきます。これらは芸術的な関心にとどまらず、歴史的・社会的・文化的な次元にまたがる根源的な問題でもあります。
高山の作品は、社会的実践として、複数の未来に向けた出発点となる可能性を持っています。本コロキウムでは日本に焦点を当てつつも、高山の作品そのものが日本をグローバルな状況と接続させている点にも注目し、世界における日本の位置についても考察を行う予定です。
本コロキウムは、高山明本人に加え、さまざまな分野の研究者らを迎えて開催されます。2024年11月にニューヨークで開催された第1回に続き、本会は第2回の開催となります。
