Alfredo Jaar

Alfredo Jaar is an artist based in New York, as well as a photographer, architect, and filmmaker. His works have been exhibited worldwide, including at the Venice Biennale (1986, 2007, 2009, 2013), the São Paulo Biennale (1987, 1989, 2010, 2021), and Documenta (1987, 2002). Major solo exhibitions have been held at venues such as the New Museum (New York, 1992), Whitechapel (London, 1992), the Moderna Museet in Stockholm (1994), the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (1995), and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome (2005). Additionally, his exhibitions have taken place at Musée des Beaux-Arts Lausanne (2007), HangarBicocca (Milan, 2008), Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlinische Galerie, and Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst (all in Berlin, 2012), Rencontres d’Arles (2013), the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma (Helsinki, 2014), the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2017), Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Cape Town, 2020), Sesc Pompeia (São Paulo, 2021), and KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art (Berlin, 2024).

In Japan, following his receipt of the Hiroshima Art Prize in 2018, a solo exhibition was held at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art in 2023. He has carried out more than 70 urban intervention projects around the world, and over 80 books have been published on his work.

Jaar has received numerous awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship (1985), MacArthur Fellowship (2000), Hiroshima Art Prize (2018), Hasselblad Award (2020), Albert Camus Mediterranean Award (2024), Edward MacDowell Medal, and the Prix Pictet (both in 2025).

His works are held in many public and private collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the São Paulo Museum of Art, Tate (London), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Nationalgalerie (Berlin), Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid), Moderna Museet (Stockholm), MAXXI – National Museum of 21st Century Arts (Rome), the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Humlebæk), Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokushima Modern Art Museum, and M+ (Hong Kong), among many others.

アルフレド・ジャーは、ニューヨークを拠点とする作家であり、写真家、建築家、映像作家である。作品は世界各地で展⽰され、ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ（1986、2007、2009、2013）、サンパウロ・ビエンナーレ（1987、1989、2010、2021）、ドクメンタ（1987、2002）に出品されている。 主な個展は、ニュー・ミュージアム（ニューヨーク、1992）、 ホワイトチャペル（ロンドン、1992）、ストックホルム近代美術館（1994）、シカゴ現代美術館（1995）、ローマ現代美術館（2005）などで開催されている。その他、ローザンヌ美術館（2007）、ハンガー・ビコッカ（ミラノ、2008）、アルテ・ナ ショナル・ギャラリー、ベルリニッシェ・ギャラリー、ノイエ・ゲゼルシャフト・フュア・ビルデンデ・クンスト（いずれもベルリン、2012）、アルル国際写真フェスティバル（2013）、ヘルシンキ現代美術館（2014）、ヨークシャー彫刻公園（2017）、 ツァイツ・アフリカ現代美術館（ケープタウン、2020）、セスキ・ポンペイア（サンパウロ、2021）、キンドル（ベルリン、2024）で展覧会が⾏われた。

⽇本においては、2018年のヒロシマ賞受賞にともない、2023年に広島市現代美術館で個展が開催された。 世界各地で70以上の都市介⼊型プロジェクトを実施し、80冊を超える書籍が出版されている。

これまでにグッゲンハイム・フェロー（1985）、マッカーサー・フェロー（2000）、ヒロシマ賞（2018）、ハッセルブラッド賞（2020）、アルベール・カミュ地中海賞（2024）、エドワード・マクドウェル・メダル、ピクテ賞（ともに2025）を受賞している。

作品の収蔵先は、ニューヨーク近代美術館、グッゲンハイム美術館（ニューヨーク）、アート・インスティテュート・オブ・シカゴ、シカゴ現代美術館、ロサンゼルス現代美術館、ロサンゼルス・カウンティ美術館、サンパウロ美術館、テート美術館（ロンドン）、ポンピドゥ・センター（パリ）、ナショナル・ギャラ リー（ベルリン）、アムステルダム市⽴美術館、ソフィア王妃芸術センター（マドリード）、ストックホルム近代美術館、国⽴21世紀美術館（ローマ）、ローマ現代美術館、ルイジアナ近代美術館（フムレベック）、広島市現代美術館、徳島県⽴近代美術館、M+（⾹港）など美術館、個⼈蔵ともに多数。
