Negative and reductive phrases that are immediately demotivating and undermining of cultural aspiration. Either that, or words presented out of context.
Tokyo University of the Arts and UAL: University of the Arts London Central Saint Martins are two educational institutions specializing in Art and Design that are each recognized for their global influence, the excellence of their legacy, and the depth of their impact on contemporary cultural landscapes. We have chosen to work in consort, to affect distinctiveness in the area of international partnership and collaboration. We have elected to forefront student agency and co-operation as a means of seeding change (cultural and social). We have initiated a long-term commitment to mutual recognition as a route to a genuine exchange of values and perspectives. We are actively and strategically connecting to a much wider network of specialist Universities in the interest of a future facing Shared Campus that harvests wisdom from experience.
We are doing all of this for nothing, with no particular hope and no fixed ambition.
It is way past the time when we should start to actively doubt orthodox positions and dominant cultural voices that have no basis in diversity or a range of insights. It’s time to want nothing, because we need to imagine everything. It is the moment to capture hope in the processing of positive actions. The next generation, our students, can work without ambition because there is an immediacy; their efforts and discourses are meaningful in the now. There is no particular point, because there are multiple perspectives and multiple solutions that demand a fairer environmental and social ecology and a more equitable distribution of positive outcomes.
It is not necessary to grow transcultural collaborations, it’s essential. If we believe in humanity, there are no national borders. If we need global solutions, we need international communities. If our future is to be assured, it is vital that our individuals can connect their realities. And, if we aspire to education, we have to start to learn from outside of our own priorities.

Lee Kit is known for his installations which use various media such as projector light, videos, sounds, words and found objects, and his artworks make tranquil space and expand on the concept of ‘paintings’.
Having been born and raised in Hong Kong, a city that has been susceptible to political turbulence, Lee has been conscious of the current socio-political climate.
His thoughts and actions that support this will provide great inspiration for our department, which is engaged in making and research while considering art in the global age.
In this open lecture, Lee will introduce his past activities and think about how to live better in today’s difficult environment, together with the students who are currently exhibiting at the graduation exhibition. Please have a look!

A Narrative Inquiry on Career Sustenance of Contemporary Artists
Shiseido Gallery has been engaging in a range of activities for more than a century, and has based on the notion of discovering and creating new aesthetics. Shiseido art egg is an open call program designed to give to promising new artists access to the Gallery. This year’s shiseido art egg, the fourteenth, will feature solo exhibitions by three artists, selected from among 215 applicants nationwide. The third artist in this 14th shiseido art egg, Claire Fujita has expanded her interest in interrelations and distances between humans, and the way communication has changed with the times. She creates mechanical objects and installations that represent various relationships, and has transformed the gallery into a dynamic place that includes sound and time. In the main gallery, she has installed a huge, central chandelier-like object, and arranged moving metal rods on the walls around it, conjuring up an image of a secret ball dance being held in the basement of Ginza. The seashell works on the mezzanine and in the smaller gallery trace and measure the supposed “golden ratio” proportions of said shells, and convert the results into sound and drawings. Growing up in multiple cultures and residing overseas for extended periods, Fujita has always been conscious of how she is different to others. Attesting to the “unfathomable” aspects of this experience, and making interesting observations on these, she turns them into works. These are also contemplations on the structure of relationships, and her modest resistance to social issues such as “division” and “peer pressure,” which are said to be accelerated by new forms of communication.
Content: Art As Experiment: Body in the Kitchen This event is an open studio for GAP’s 2020 Global Art Joint Curriculum (co-hosted by CSM and BAP). In previous years, the program had been held in London, Paris, Tokyo and Toride, where each school visited one another at their campuses. This year, however, all the programs were held online. Despite being online, all the workshops developed in a way in which one could sense, through the screen, the body movements and things which took place behind the moving images. This open studio is an opportunity to present some of the outcomes from these workshops. *International Joint Project granted by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) through its Program for Enforcing the Function of National Universities
Art As Experiment: Body in the Kitchen アートは実験であるーキッチンと身体ー 本オープンスタジオは、GAP専攻の2020年度グローバル・アート・ジョイント・カリキュラム(CSMとBAPとの共同授業)のオープンスタジオとなります。これまでは実際にお互いにロンドン、パリ、東京、取手を尋ねて実施されましたが、今年度は全てオンラインでの実施となりました。しかしオンラインでありながらボディームーブメントや映像の背後にあるものを感じさせるワークショップを展開してきました。その成果発表とも言える機会となります。
